Camp Midvale, up to the 1950s a major Nature Friends property in New Jersey, also served as a safe haven for refugees from Nazi-ridden Europe. Klaus-Dieter Gross looks at an episode in the early 1940s which shows how in spite of a common ideology a group of young Austrian antifascists, the Freie Österreichische Jugend, failed to live up to the expectations of the locals who tried to save their Camp in troubling times.
